dduane: ll: First ground picture of Mars.  This JUST happened minutes ago. 1:42am EST 8/6/2012 Sorry, folks, but this is NOT an early image from Curiosity. This image comes from the Spirit rover (it was taken in the crater Gusev) and was taken on May 19, 2005. (The day after my birthday, which is partly how I remember.) Other problems with the claim: (a) Who the hell lands a remote-survey spacecraft at local dawn or sunset? You want decent lighting for the landing-confirmation pictures. And while we’re discussing that: (b) If you look at one of the genuine right-after-landing images, you can see that bright sun is looking right over Curiosity’s shoulder — at least a thirty-degree angle, maybe higher. Not sunset or dawn. And also (c): Curiosity’s color cameras haven’t been turned on yet. Sorry. Someone got overexcited when they came across the above image, is all. (Not that it isn’t beautiful and worthy of excitement.) …So please pass the word.
